Clearing cobwebs is normally part of cleaning the outside of your house. We clear webs from window frames, sills, eaves, gable ends, veranda ceilings and pergolas, with a soft brush on a pole from the ground.
Customers often mention it in their reviews. It is also easy to leave undone, because the worst of it is above head height, where nobody looks.
Where webbing collects
Spiders build in the sheltered corners, not out in the open.
The junction where an eave meets the wall. Inside a gable end. Along the top of a window frame and tucked under the sill. Veranda ceilings, pergola beams, behind downpipes, in shutter recesses and around the meter box.
That is why a house can look freshly cleaned from the driveway and tired from the front step.
Why it makes a house look tired
Clean glass with a grey web strung across the top corner of the frame does not look clean. The eye finds the web and stops there. On a rendered wall, old webbing collects dust and leaves a grey smudge that looks like staining until you get close.
If you are selling or leasing, it is one of the smaller jobs on the list and one of the most noticeable.
How it is cleared
A soft brush on a pole, worked into the corners instead of swiped across them.
Swiping breaks a web and leaves half of it behind, with the dust it was holding smeared down the wall. Working the corner lifts the whole thing out.
Around windows, webs are cleared before the glass is cleaned, so the dust does not land on clean glass.
What we do not do
We do not spray.
Clearing webs is cleaning. Applying pesticide is licensed pest control, a different trade with different rules. If you have a real recurring spider problem rather than the normal seasonal build-up, a pest controller is the right person and we will tell you that instead of taking the work.
Timing
Spring and autumn are when spiders build most, so that is when clearing is worth doing.
Webs come back, which is why most people fold cobweb clearing into a regular window cleaning plan instead of treating it as a one-off.
